Is America Still Making Men?

Dennis Prager is a nationally syndicated radio host and columnist.  One of his radio shows is dedicated to exploring the differences between men and women called The Male Female Hour.  In fact, my wife and I listen to Prager often.

In this article he explores why America, once a place that prided itself on "making" good men, now has created a society that makes it hard to be one.

Read the article linked below and then answer one of the first three questions and the "Allplay" question in a comment.
"Is America Still Making Men?" by Dennis Prager in The National Review

1. Do you disagree with anything in the article?
2. Dennis Prager gives 9 reasons why America no longer creates men.  Which one have you experienced or seen?
3. Has feminism truly been bad for men, as #3 implies?

Allplay: Is Rassendyll a good example of what Prager thinks men should be like?

  1. 3.I feel like feminism has been both good and bad for men because not every man is not responsible for the ways things where for women but I also feel like it was good for men because they saw that maybe things that were going on needed to be changed for the better.

  2. Yes Rassendyll was a man because he chose not to marry flavia because he knew things wouldn't go right and left knowing that he might not see flavia again.

  3. No,i don't disagree with anything he said.I have seen #2 in numerous people, with the person not having a man in their life or household as they grow up. When a boy doesn't grow up with a MAN in his life whether its a relative or anyone, it makes a big difference. Living with a women as a boy,the boy will be lost. The boy won't know what a true man is. I think boys just need that man figure. No, feminism has not been bad for men, just because of certain toys or certain things weren't aloud doesn't have nothing to do with being a man. How you are brought up and what you are taught is what makes a boy form into a man or stay a boy.

  4. I agree completely. Men ave become the weaker of the two genders. As a person who has grown up without a father I have seen many false father figures who only showed me how to not act. Woman who speak their opinion are shunning a mans opinion and yet expect us to only listen to them. This has made a one sided issue forcing men into a corner to act more feminine.

  5. I both agree and disagree with this article. I agree that the idea of becoming men rather than boys have vastly increased in society, but I do feel like the over all maturity of boy as well as men have decreased over the years as well. In the time period of most high school parents, they were all raised to be respectful twords adults, but in today's society those ideas are not playing a very big role. I have experianced #1 because i fell like it is the modern way to great someone. For example I would be able to call my dad by his first name, and he will still respond as equally as if i called him dad. Feminism is not bad for men because it gives woman opportunities like they do. Like Denis Prager said there is a difference between boys and men, so it shouldn't make a difference if they were truly men. -Madison Groppe

  6. One of the reasons that I have experienced in my life that Dennis Prager listed off was the unearned self esteem. In my old school, everyone got a trophy of a medal of some kind even if they did nothing to deserve it. I believe that Rassendyll is a good example of what Prager calls a man. Rudolf takes responsibility of taking over for the king and his kingdom. This is similar to when Dennis Prager said that a man should have "toughness and stoicism".

  7. 1) I agree with everything in this article except for one part. I didn't agree when he said you have to marry in order to show you are responsible and committed. A man doesn't have to be married to be responsible or committed. But his other points were valid, keeping your name to younger boys as "Mr." and not by first name etc. -Kyla Fuller

  8. (2)I've seen people in my life time ,especially with all of the media promoting not committing, with many celebrities doing things that should be only kept within marriage, such as sex or living together. This gives many NO reason to get married, because now in our generation it's alright to not commit because you already do everything "Fun" to do in marriage, making it less of a special part of life then it is supposed to be. God made marriage the ultimate sign of commitment, when you say your vows you're committing yourself for life, but even if people wait for marriage divorce rates are going out of the roof because people aren't "happy". Commitment is seen as optional happiness should not change commitment because when you get married its not going to be all sunshine and rainbows, there will be hardships and you won't always be happy and might not always feel love towards your spouse. In many families, the father figure is out of the picture, making the wife take responsibility, and to be honest there are somethings women cannot be; Men have a special role as a parent especially towards raising their male children, Fathers are there to show a prime example of how to treat women and be a real man, who takes responsibility for his actions and isn't afraid of being honest and caring. (I could go on for at least a few pages but i'll cut it here) ALLPLAY- In the beginning of the book he is still a boy, but through out the book you can see the progression into a man as he takes responsibilities and starts to mature in a sense. By the end of the book he is a good example of what Dennis Prager's ideal of what a man should be. Rudolf shows compassion and takes responsibility, he isn't afraid of getting in trouble for doing the right thing. He sacrifices love for his duty and treats others with respect. I believe that he changed a lot and adheres to the definition of a Man by Dennis Prager's examples.

  9. I disagree with the fact that everything has become female based because men play a really big role in our country and lives still. I have seen that boys are scared of commitment and that chivalry is going away more and more. The role of men being the head of the house is slowly dying. Feminism hasn't been completely terrible for men I think females do have an impact on how a boy acts and grows up. No Rassendyll is not a good example of a man but Rudolf was because he made sacrifices and did the right thing for Flavia.

  10. 1. There were times in the article that I agreed with things Dennis Prager said. The list of 1-9 has things that I agree with. I agree that men have to do their jobs and have to be a good family member. Men should be responsible and take responsibility for their actions. There should be respect among people of different ages. I don't agree with job roles. I think women should be given the opportunity to work jobs that were usually men's. For example, a construction worker may be a woman. Women who work road construction should not be dismissed because of their jobs. Sometimes, a job is a job and that is it.
Feminism could be considered bad if it is not balanced. People should be focused on human rights where all people are treated equally. One gender should not be recognized as better than the other.

  11. I disagree with Dennis's notion that the line between man and boy has been destroyed. He says that many men would prefer to be called by their first names as boys are, but I think that there are just as many men that would prefer otherwise. I think Rudolf is a good example of what Dennis wants men to be like, as he is not sensitive and is not emotional often.

  12. People should be able to do whatever they want with there lives. Gender should not matter at all when it comes to doing a job that they will be doing for the rest of their lives. Everyone in the world should be treated as equals, and not judged differently because of their gender.

I feel that men should step up sometimes and be the better person. But gender should not matter at all, people should not be treated differently.Everyone should be treated the same.

  14. I agree with everything from the Dennis Prager article. I agree with every point that he clearly stated with evidence that is going on with our world. I believe that neither gender should have total dominance over the world. I.e.-feminist. I believe everone should have equal rights but taking the next step from that is something I don't support. I feel that with #5 there re ways of bonding without playing sports or being a "tough guy". Hanging out today means you have to be cool and know people from different prospective. I don't really believe in feminism or support it because you should have something better to do in your life. - Trey DeCicco

  15. I somewhat agree with dennis prager but it kind of depends on the situation. I diagree with statement #5 not every guy that plays sports is considered a tough guy, or a Jock I think that is more of a stereotype, because after playing sports for a while I havent seen much evidence supporting it. I also am mixed about if feminism has been good or bad for men because either way it shapes our lives today, and has changed a lot from the past so it depends on how you look at it.

    1. I believe Denis Prager is well said with his ideas. I don't exactly agree with him however. He doesn't understand all the other activities that tend to push people around.

  16. 1. No
    2. 3
    3. I do not believe anything is wrong with feminism. I just believe that there should still be a ton of respect still in feminism. I have seen people take feminism to a disrespectful level and try to dominate men. In the Bible it states, men rule over women, but does not say “rule over with disrespect”. So in both male and female roles, there should be respect for one another. Women should not dominate over men. Things would be out of order.

  17. I agree with Dennis Prager and his points he made. I really like the point he made about sports and how you dont have to play sports to be consider "tough" because you can be emotionally tough and not sporty tough. I also liked the point about the world he made, that neither female or male should have more power over another because they are both strong in there own way. They both shape the world around us today. People also use gender as a way to hire for jobs. The way people look at genders is different for everyone.

  18. I personally do not have any disliking about the article. It states true facts about how men act and how childhood and other things affect their lives and how they act. I have witnessed number three. Feminism isn't something bad in my opinion and I think that this impacts the guys/boys in a good way and not negatively as some people seem to think. Boys get to see what life is like if treated somewhat like a girl and it would help them to also know how to treat women later on in his lifetime, not just for a girlfriend or wife but a sister or cousin as well. It will help them to know how other want to be treated and how to be kind.

  19. I think that certain aspects of society shape young children, especially men to be a certain way. Television shows for example portray men in an image.

  20. 2) Okay, so i have personally experienced this even though i am not a boy it still plays out into girls lives. #8 was the reason I have experienced and seen because now everybody has to win whether it be at a dance competition, or any other sports event. Everybody has to get first place and I don't think it is right to do that. The winners should get rewarded for their hard work but those that did't win do not need a trophy as well. That ruins the special feeling of getting first. You should have to work up to getting a trophy/award not just get it for participating. Not always winning also builds character. When you loose a couple times you know that you have to work harder next time. So, that is what i have to say about #8.

Yes Rassendyll was a man because he did't marry Flavia when he really wanted to and he did the right thing for the kingdom.

  21. I have personally witnessed american's making their lives rights centered rather than responsibility centered. i do not think its only men, i feel like women also have a part in that. i think that Rasendyll was a good man because at the end of the day he did what was best for the kingdom, even f it's not what he wanted. ~Deanna Johnson

  22. I agree with most of the article and i believe that feminisim has been bad for men because women are not using feminism to make anything between women and men equal they are kinda making men look cruel -42422

  23. I agree with this article because it does seem like women everyday take a bigger role in society than man do. Women (most of the time) are dedicated to what they want and committed, but men today seem not to be as committed in society or in real life situations. But then again, we can't put men on spot like this when women have also done these things. Everyone should be treated equally and we shouldn't blame one gender for everything that happens in society today. Reason why women have stepped up their roles in society is because of the things people make women seem incapable of and this is the part feminism steps in because women are partially capable of anything men can do and most of the time in society women are taking advantage of and disrespected in many ways. I have witnessed boys/girls grow up without a father figure because of the father choosing rather or not to be in their lives. Not having a father figure is hard, because you need that role to look up to, to teach you masculinity and help you grow up and teach you things a mother figure can not teach you. Feminism has been both bad and good on men. Bad because it sometimes make men look bad in ways and good because it tells society that girls are capable of anything men are. - Serena

  24. 1. I agree with everything he said, especially number 3. Feminism has weakened the role of men significantly. Women have come to believe that the role of a man and woman is the same when its really not. I also agree that growing up without a father significantly changes the way a boy becomes a man. Boys raised without a man in their life grow up slightly more emotional and less strong (for the most part). They have a more gentle side than a boy raised with a man in their life.
